ABOUT THIS COURSE

Diagnosis and Treatment of CAS Through a Neuro-Affirming Lens

This introductory course will assist SLPs in identifying and treating childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Differential diagnosis and treatment approaches will be explored through recognizing the features that distinguish CAS from other speech sound disorders. Participants will learn about the principles of motor learning and their role in treating motor speech disorders in children. This course also explores neurodiversity-affirming considerations and approaches to CAS treatment, helping clinicians provide individualized support that respects each child’s needs and preferences. Ideal for SLPs working with pediatric populations who want to expand their knowledge with current, affirming practices.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for practicing speech-language pathologists and SLP graduate students who work with pediatric populations and want to expand their knowledge of CAS with current, affirming practices. Course content is presented at an Introductory instructional level; no prior specialized experience with CAS is required.

Partial Credit: ASHA CEUs are awarded only for full attendance of the 2-hour session. Partial credit is not available for late arrival, early departure, or incomplete attendance.

Jamie Boyle, M.S., CCC-SLP

Jamie Boyle is a speech-language pathologist and owner of Speech Baby LLC. As an autistic provider, her mission is to share neurodiversity-affirming practices that align with the Autistic community. She is published in the International Journal of Autism and Related Disabilities, co-authoring the research article Neurodiversity-Affirming Motor Speech Intervention for Autistic Individuals with Co-Existing Childhood Apraxia of Speech: A Tutorial. Over the past five years, Jamie has collaborated, consulted, and created with professionals who share a passion for changing the way we view and talk about autism — including Speech Scientist, Dr. Moore Speech, Speech Dude, Sensory SLP, Mrs. Speechie P, and Meaningful Speech.
