ABOUT THIS COURSE

Problem Solving: Picky Eating in Toddlers

Picky eating and problem feeding are often used interchangeably, yet they call for different assessment and intervention approaches. This introductory course will help speech-language pathologists confidently distinguish between the two, and will equip clinicians with practical, play-based strategies to support families consistently across home, daycare, and school. Through case-based discussion, participants will also learn to recognize when a child’s feeding difficulties warrant referral, identify the medical team members who may need to be involved, and evaluate family dynamics and mealtime routines that impact progress.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Participants Will Be Able To:

  • Describe the difference between picky eating and problem feeding.

  • Implement play-based therapy strategies to work with toddlers to encourage exposure and exploration with non-preferred foods.

  • Identify factors that might impact progress or diagnosis, and identify medical team members who can support the child and family.

  • Evaluate child/family dynamics, mealtime routines, and other factors impacting mealtime behaviors.

INTENDED AUDIENCE & LEVEL

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for practicing speech-language pathologists and SLP graduate students who work with pediatric populations and want to build foundational skills in identifying and addressing picky eating and problem feeding in toddlers. Course content is presented at an Introductory instructional level; no prior specialized experience with pediatric feeding is required.

Partial Credit: ASHA CEUs are awarded only for full attendance of the 1-hour session. Partial credit is not available for late arrival, early departure, or incomplete attendance.

YOUR PRESENTER

Cara Fox, M.S., CCC-SLP

Cara Fox is a speech-language pathologist, feeding specialist, and owner of TalkEatPlayGrow. She has worked across a variety of settings, including hospitals, outpatient programs, schools, NICUs, and home care. Cara earned her Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Loyola University in 2014 and has extensive experience with infant feeding, behavioral feeding, and a wide range of speech and language disorders. She now channels that experience into building TalkEatPlayGrow and serving families throughout the Philadelphia suburbs. Outside of work, Cara is a mom to three little, wild & crazy boys.
