Our Approach

We work with children from infancy through school age, in homes, schools, daycares, and at our East Falls clinic.

Every session is child-led & strength-based, built around what helps your child light up:

• Play-based, joyful sessions
• Neurodiversity-affirming care
• Trauma-informed therapists
• Sensory-informed approach
• Collaboration with families, schools, and care teams
• Committment to the latest evidence-based approaches

You’re the expert on your child. We’re here to support you both.

Not sure which service best suits your child? That’s what we’re here for.

Our Values

  • We meet every child and family exactly as they are. Our job is to support growth, not change who your child is.

  • We show up with kindness, for the families we work with and for ourselves. It's the foundation of everything we do.

  • We think critically, listen openly, and never stop learning. Different perspectives make us better therapists and better advocates.

  • We follow your child's lead and lean into what brings them joy. Learning is most powerful when it doesn't feel like work.

  • We show up for our families and our team in a way that is consistent, thoughtful, and genuinely helpful.

Learn More About Small Talk

  • At Small Talk, we listen to and learn from neurodivergent voices to shape everything we do. Speech therapy has a history of ableism. We’re committed to changing that.

  • We prioritize total communication. That means meeting your child exactly where they are right now. Communication looks different for every child, and all of it is valid:

    • Spoken language

    • Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)

    • Sign language

    • Gestures

    • Hand-leading

  • Gestalt Language Processing is a language theory used to describe how some children process and learn language, often in meaningful chunks or scripts rather than building language one word at a time.

Some signs your child might process language this way include:

    • Repeating phrases from shows or movies

    • Humming or singing familiar songs rather than using words

    • Speaking with rich intonation

    • Language that seems rigid or context-specific

    • Producing long strings of unintelligible speech

    • Little to no progress with traditional speech therapy

    • A strong connection to music and song

    • Returning to favorite scenes from videos or movies again and again

  • Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) refers to any tool or strategy that supports communication beyond spoken words. This includes high-tech devices, picture boards, sign language, and more.

There are no prerequisites to AAC. It's not a backup plan, it's a powerful support we use early and often. We assist with evaluating, funding, and implementing high-tech AAC, alongside a range of light- and mid-tech options.

  • Your child is our guide. We build every session around what brings them joy, because that's where real communication happens.

It's also a place for our team: a space to collaborate, connect, and recharge.

Drop in, have a coffee, stay a while.
